our thriller better quality

Thriller evaluation Question 1

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

There are many convention that make a thriller, and these convention make make and build the suspense and tension that make audience connect and feel for a character. Our thriller uses convention like suspense to to have the audience connect to worry and connect to our character. The setting for our thriller was inspired by the film "Fargo". We felt that the snow added an element of being alone as well A giving our thriller a unique look. What I believe that out thriller achieved that is unique is the dependence on technology that people have in their every day live.

Thriller evaluation question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?(gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity etc)

Our thriller represents teenagers and the main character in our thriller opening is 17 years old When thinking about the Mise-en-scene of the character we thought about how he would look, we decided that we wanted him to look urban and casual, this is why our character is seen to be wearing a blue striped hood, jogging bottoms and trainers.we also gave him a bag to wear. The bag was to show that urban young teenagers are in a rush to go places and that they carry things with them when going out.

Our thriller shows teenagers in negative way. Teenagers are show and being too reliant on social media, and that this reliance has left them to be naive which leaves to out main protagonist being kidnapped due to his curiosity about the text message on his phone. Our thriller does not really present sexuality or ethnicity in any particular way, it concentrates on age.

Thriller evaluation question 5

Thriller evaluation question 6

what have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

the technologies we have used are blogger, final cut express, youtube, camera, Moby gratis etc.

we used these technologies for various reasons. youtube was used to upload our films to the internet to give the wider audience a chance to watch our piece also allowing us to easily upload to our blogs. using our mobile phones were also helpful during the filming process, as it allowed to quickly take photos of locations or events to our blog where ever we were.google allowed us to find a number of resources and information that helped and inspired us when it came to thinking of ideas for our thriller. also more social forms of technology were used like Facebook along with survey monkey. this allowed us to make a survey and spread it to gain audience research. From these technologies we have learned that they are a very important factor to filming and making a film. we have learned how to use cameras properly and have learned to use websites such as blogger and survey monkey with confidence

Thriller evaluation question 7

looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the product?

Our preliminary task

Our thriller

i believe that we have learnt and improved on a lot of things from when we filmed our preliminary task.
when filming the preliminary task we were not as organised, this can be seen through out the preliminary  there are continuity errors and the editing is not that good. however when filming out thriller we now knew problems we would face with organisation and because of this we were able to plan ahead, and filming went smoother than it did when filming our preliminary.

the thriller gave us the opportunity to try out allot of different camera angels compared to the preliminary . we also gain'd more experience in editing , our shots were allot smoother and there was continuity through out, we also added transition and effects.

Editing Day 3

Today we have manged to fix a problem we have with a dysnc in the audio and we have added a sound effect of a phone ringing that we needed in one of our scenes. All of the scenes are in order and we have placed our opening credits in between shots of our scene. this goes well because it is timed with the rhythm of the music we have. Are thriller is more or less finished and now all we have to do is to save it as a quicktime and upload it   to you tube.

Moby Gratis songs

We have now received the music that we might use for be using for our thriller opening. The two songs that we have chosen are 'all is perfect' and 'black room'. Both of the songs are different form each other but we prefer the second song 'blackroom', this is because the song has a certain rhythm that we like we have chosen it because it has contrapuntal sound. It does not really match the events of the thriller, but this is to make it seem as what the kidnapper is doing is effortless.

Editing day 1

Today we uploaded all the footage we shot and have started to separate it into clips and take out footage we are not going to use. the process is long and exhausting but it has given us a really good opportunity  to watch over everything and pick out what we like and what we don't, and it has also given us the chance to see what we could have improved on.

Filming Day 2

When filming our outdoor scene we were delayed to the terrible rain we were experiencing. Afterwards it started to snow and the park that we were planning on filming on was covered, but we decided that the ice provided grip and was not as slippery as we thought it would be and we ended up filming in the snow. We thought that the snow gave our thriller a unique look and we think that the snow helped put emphasis of the desalite environment that our character would find himself in. For the costume we decided that our protagonist would have a urban look and have a curious attitude. setting up camera proved to be a little bit difficult because of the snow that grounds surface was slightly uneven and we found that the camera would be slanted and it took us multiple shots to get the camera even. After we fixed the position of the camera everything went smoothly and we manged to finish filming in a few ours. we will now be editing.

Filming Day 1

Today we started to film out thriller. We started with the last scene of our thriller becuase we thought it was the most conviniant and easiest to film as when we went into filming the weather was not good to be able to film outside safely. we began by getting the main character of the opening(Jack Meakin ) in costume and makeup, this process was fairly easy and we then started preparing the setting for our thriller. when choosing the positioning of the camera we thought using a mixture of mid and close up shots would work for the trapped and tied up atmosphere of the scene. We are planning to use jump cuts and varied them between the different shots to put further emphasis on the trapped scenario. when filming in shower room setting we chose, we were hoping that the setting would be darker, after a short discussion we decided that we would continue to film our scene and make the scene darker when editing. The acting in out thriller was not the best but we managed to get a few shots were our actor was able to scream the way we needed him to. In the end, we managed to film all the shots that we wanted and were happy.

Changes to our thriller

due to complications we were unable to film certain scenes that we were intending to film in our thriller opening. due to this reasons we have changed the beginning of our thriller and left some scenes out near the ending. instead of a football match taking place between friends at the beginning, we have our main character receiving a mysterious text from unknown number. he decides to investigate, and this is how our character gets kidnapped. In the ending scenes of out thriller we wanted to have the main character dowsed in petrol and burned alive by the kidnapper.

Locations for filming

These may be locations we film at.

analysis of past student work

while researching for out thriller opening we have started to look back at past student work. This thriller is a good thriller all together. using a good range of different camera angles and fast editing to build up suspense. also it is clear that they took time to think of good locations to use and because of this it builds the correct atmosphere. over all this is a very effective thriller.

Thriller opening storyboard

Our storyboard for our thriller opening

Maguffin

A muggifin, sometimes known as mcguffin is a plot device where an object of value is presented and the main characters try to obtain it.The maguffin is has no real importance in the story apart from motivating the characters and advancing the story. often films will use power, money and survival as the maguffin.

Survey Monkey!

Today our group joined and made a survey on the site survey monkey. We hope that this survey will give us a better understanding of what audiences look for in  movies and we hope to incorporate these suggestions in to our thriller opening.

Call sheet dilemma

Our group were supposed to start filming a scene for our thriller opening today, but a member of our group was unable to attend today as well some of the resources we needed for that particular scene were not avalible to us today. Our group has decided that we will be moving the date we film to next wednesday as this gives us more time to sort out any problems we might face with the attendance of people in our thriller and also gives us more time to acquire the resources needed for the scene.

Music used in our thriller

we have considered the music that we would use for out thriller. We can not use any copyrighted music for our thriller so we have looked at alternatives free to use music sources. We have been introduced to the free music site MobiGratis, which provides non copyright music for non profit/student films.I have signed up for the site and now we, in our group are looking at what we Music we might use in our thriller opening. For the begging of the thriller we would like to have something upbeat as we are having people play football in the begging, when the kidnapping of our main character happens we plan on using something more dramatic.

Risk Assesment

Before we begin filming our thriller we must first think about the risk to health and safety when filming each scene. We need to  think about our location and how we can keep everyone safe.We are filming out doors in a park meaning that we will have to look at things like the weather and the area we film in.If we have to film on a day when it has been raining heavily then instead of the risk of someone slipping and injuring themselves on the grass we must reschedule for another day.

Sabotage (1953 Alfred Hitchcock) analysis

An example of suspense and shock  is seen in Alfred Hitchcock's Sabotage. In the scene that I watched in class a undercover agent has sent away a Film reel to a young boy to be delivered to a cinema at a specific time.In the film container there is a bomb. the boy is unaware of the bomb he is carrying and encounters a number of situations that hold him up.This brilliantly shows both shock and suspense as the audience is at the edge of their seats wondering if the boy will make it on time and be saved. the shock for this scene is when the boy is waiting on the bus and unfortunately does not manage to make it on time. This shocks the audience as the death of the young boy is quite dark and also the audience becomes attached to the boy and they hope that he survives.

Children of men analysis

The opening to the film "Children of men" would be a great example of suspense. the begging of the film establishes that the film takes place in the future with the news of youngest persons death "baby Diego". the year is 2027 and people have lost the ability to reproduce. The intro starts with the protagonist in a coffee shop hearing new of the dead, he then leaves the shop.Up to this point nothing out of the ordinary has happened and no danger has been applied, when the main characters is walking away from the coffee shop, a explosion comes from the coffee shop killing every one inside. this intro keep everything normal until the last minute catching them off guard.

Suspense and shock

Suspense and shock are meant to lead the audience on and keep them asking what will happen and to surprise the audience and catch them off guard. An example of a suspense could be if a scene started off in an ordinary place for example a office, in the office every on is carrying on as normal with work, but then the camera reveal a bomb with a timer counting down under someone's desk. this would be an example of suspense, it leaves the audience wondering if someone will manage to find and stop the bomb in time, or will the bomb go off and kill everyone in the office. An example of shock would be a similar scenario to suspense except in this scenario the audience would not know about the bomb untill it had gone off, catching the audience y surprise and shocking them.

Aspects of a Thriller

The genre of thriller includes many different aspects from other genres, which is why it is very difficult to describe the aspects of a thriller. the purpose of a thriller is to bring suspense to the audience, to have them sitting at the edge of their seats.Thrillers do this by including these factors that are commonly found in all thrillers, these factors are chase scenes, fight scenes, kidnappings, murder, red herrings, plot twists and cliffhangers. These aspects are just a small number  that can be included with in a thriller
